Penha Longa Resort Hosts Golf’s Superstars of Tomorrow inThe Portuguese Intercollegiate Open
Sports enthusiasts in Portugal will have a unique opportunity to assess golf’s superstars of tomorrow when Penha Longa Resort hosts the Portuguese Intercollegiate Open from February 15 to 18.
The event, just 30 minutes away from the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, will showcase outstanding golf from players from around the world in the Global Junior Golf Tour (for those aged between 12 and 18) and the 21golfleague (for those aged 19 to 21).
“Competition will be undoubtedly fierce as the Portuguese Intercollegiate Open contributes to World Amateur Golf Ranking,” said the resort’s General Manager David Martinez. “But for players and spectators alike, the unique location of this tournament offers a naturally inspiring and historic sporting panorama to savour.”
Penha Longa is based in the heart of Portugal’s spectacular Sintra Mountain National Park and was once the retreat of the Portuguese Royal family. This rich history is reflected in the 19th century palace, protected monastery ruins and medieval gardens that have become historical landmarks of both the resort and its two golf courses.
The Portuguese Intercollegiate Open will be played on Penha Longa’s famous The Atlantic, an 18-hole, par 72 Championship course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. “The 18 holes of parkland are a challenge for every level of handicap, but for sure the holes to watch will be numbers 15 and 16 at just two holes, several extra strokes can be easily added to the scorecard,” said Hugo Pinheiro, Golf Director at Penha Longa Resort.
Penha Longa has long enjoyed a reputation for outstanding golf. The resort recently achieved 11th place in the ‘Top 100’ list of European Golf Resorts published by Golf World and was named the ‘Best Luxury Golf Resort in Europe 2017’ by the Luxury Guide Awards. In addition to The Atlantic, the nine-hole Monastery Course is a par 35 executive course that encompasses stunning views of the resort’s historic buildings.
